True Lover’s Knot, Fraktur style, early 1800s, Bedford County, Pennsylvania

A solar eclipse today. Solar eclipses, for Hellenistic astrologers, were omens, portals of fate, immense and freaky new starts. Eclipse means a failing, a forsaking. As Anne Carson wrote—the light quits us. In an eclipse: what’s so often visible gets obscured and what we don’t typically notice suddenly comes into shocking focus. This one’s a “ring of fire” — the moon passing between Earth and sun. It’s happening near the end of Aquarius—in the arena of the sky sometimes referred to as a knot. A knot, tangle, not—connection and frustration. A knot—the inner and outer, above and below, tied together. Aquarius is the sign of the outside and the outsider, varieties of exile, innovation, midwinter’s cool distance. It feels appropriate today’s eclipse is visible only over parts of Antarctica.

Below—more about the knot of this portion of the sky, embracing the unknown, and eclipse horoscopes for all 12 signs—-
