“When our eyes rest on a painting by Rembrandt...our gaze becomes heavy, somewhat bovine. Something holds it back, a weighty force.”
— Jean Genet, “What Remains of a Rembrandt Torn into Four Equal Pieces and Flushed Down the Toilet”
Empedocles said there were four underlying substances, which he called roots or elements: earth, air, fire, water. In fits of union and separation, via the forces of Love and Strife, they engine our lives.
Fire and earth rule this week’s sky. Fire and air go up and out, Empedocles said. Earth and water, in and down. The angel comes down to earth, gets painted, muscle and bone and clothes.
This week, the sun in Capricorn forms a trine with Uranus in Taurus—-earth to earth. Grounded action from unexpected ah ha moments, brave blazes and exuberance spilling into emotional releases or unchecked egoisms. Uranus electrifies and breaks up the central star of the sun. This aspect reminds me of a text by Jean Genet called “What Remains of a Rembrandt Torn Into Four Equal Pieces and Flushed Down the Toilet” where he wrote: “One day, while riding in a train, I experienced a revelation: as I looked at the passenger sitting opposite me, I realized that every man has the same value as every other.”
From zeroing in on one man’s details—(shabby clothes, a gaze which flowed into his, mind-altering)—-a universe.
Uranus, planet of surprises, bombshells for better or worse, plus sun. Who are our solar figures? What’s up with our heart? Who or what fuels us? What kinds of authorities and hierarchies and images replace the ones that get torn up?
What remains of a Rembrandt torn into four equal pieces—-earth air water fire—and flushed down the toilet?
The moon is waning, and it’ll be new in Capricorn by Thursday——
